Criteria for the ranking in search engines

Basically two basic criteria are important when working with search engines. They define the ranking for a certain keyword in the results of search engine:

(1)  On-Page search engine optimization

Prepare your website for search engines

(2)  Off-Page search engine optimization

Number, quality and type of backlinks to your website

To reach good positions for your webpage with certain keywords (ranking), it is neccessary to prepare your page in order that search engines are able to indicate them (meaning reading and understanding). This basically means that keywords should appear on certain positions and with certain presence.

How does ranking of search engine results work?

There are 200 different criteria of ranking, which have an influence on the website as far as search engine results (SERPs) are concerned. Every of these criteria is handled differently and depends on which search engine you use. The more of these criteria are implied in your website-compared to your competitores- the better it is ranked: The ideal case would be number one for your keyword.

The rating of these criteria are not only different from search engine to search engine, but also search engines like google change them from time to time. This leads to variable positions in searching enquiries.

Not all of the criteria of search engine optimization are publicly known. Some can only be guessed according to the ranking behaviour or can be bought by patents. Even those, that are known, are not used by all webmasters. To enhance them, we described some of the known criteria and included the possibilities to use them ideally: 

Up-to-date

The actuality of a page can have great influence on the ranking. By now, the priority is very small, but this can change immediantly. You find more information in „up-to-date“.

Exterior links

Outbound links from a website to another can have a positive (suppositionally its topic relevated) or negative influence on your page rank. More about that on outbound links (outbound links)

Domain age

An important criterion is the age of a domain (how long has the domain been registerd or online?). This criterion can be devided in three more criteria:

(1)  The age of the domain,
(2)  The topically continuity and
(3)  The acitivity concerning the live span of the domain

Duplicate content

Duplicate content on own projects should be avoided. By using scripts (CMS, Blog,...) and techiques like RSS this problem happens more often than one might think. More about that in Duplicate Content.

Formating of keywords

The use of HTML-tags like H1 and H2, bold and strong can have small advantages in ranking. More about that in format (h1, strong, bold, etc.)

Keyword density

The right proportion between defined keywords and other words of a page has a positive effect on the ranking of a page. But it doesn’t work after the premise: „The more the better!“

Link title/Link texts

The proper linking from outbound websites is well known. But the interior linking is as important. That are the points on the plus side for the whole ranking of the website. More about it on link texts/ link title

Metatags

Metatags are not used that often anymore, because one says that there are better methods for getting you up in ranking. But we have to contradict: Metatags are neccessary and important. More about this in Metatags.

Topic relevance

Topic relevance is very important for inbound links. The better the topic of the page, on which the link to your page is set, the better the topic fits, the better. More about that on Topic relevance.

The criteria mentioned here and also the unknown criteria are always to be seen in combination! No criterion or factor alone will help you to get one of the top rankings on search engines. Only the right mixture results the treasured first rank.
